What an incredibly beautiful book! There is no way to describe the love, understanding and compassion showing through every page.
The story of Janie’s life is that of a black woman seen entirely through a black woman’s eyes. Her voice is articulate, her life has quite a few bumps, but from every page the vibrancy, the struggle to be who she is speaks from the pages. Really worth the read.

This beautifully written prose by Zora Neale Hurston is a fantastic historical fiction classic that I think everyone should read whether or not you like classes or historical fiction. The MC Janie Crawford is in her forties as the story begins. As happens in so many books and real life, Janie returns to her hometown where one of her friends, Pheoby, and she strike up a very close bond over things they share. This classic is a difficult read in several ways, so be prepared for the times of a life ...more

4 stars. That was intense and heavy but also beautiful and hopeful. I loved the writing. This was my first book by Ms. Hurston (shame on me, I know) but it definitely won’t be the last. Her writing and story telling are fantastic and gripping. Janie’s story is very interesting and difficult at times but it’s told so well. It covers a lot of important topics, particularly gender roles and Ms. Hurston handles the topics with care. This is considered a classic for a reason and I can see why now.
