This is a beautifully written books with some very profound narrative. It is at times difficult to read both for the patois used and the depth of the story. Janie and Phoeby are best friends and after Janie leaves their home village and returns a changed woman she tells her story to Phoeby. It is a story of an all consuming love. More than the sum of its parts I can see why everyone loves it.

Janie is raised mostly by her grandmother who had lived in the time of slavery. When the grandmother catches Janie in her first kiss, she is promptly married off to a local farmer despite her young age. Janie hopes that she will at least find love the man after marriage. The story follows Janie through three marriages as she tries to determine her own self in these relationships. Their Eyes Were Watching God tells a story that rings too true. Our heroine, Janie, is abandoned by her mother and raised by her grandmother. Her grandmother's good intentions send her into a poorly formed marriage, and so the young girl spends the rest of her life seeking love.
