Honestly, I don't know if I have the words to express how much I loved this. I understand why people love this. This is a long story in a short book.

This crept up on me like a slow clap. As I was reading, the story was just okay, but then those last fifty or so pages completely blew my mind.

Oh, Giovanni. How my heart broke for him, not so much David though. I understood David and why he acted the way that he did.

This book! Not the least but what I expected. It is beautifully written. Haunting and still relevant today. Detailing internal struggle and choices of a gay man In the 50’s and the effect on his psyche, and exploring themes of masculinity and love. Although moving and beautifully written it is heartbreaking.

I think it would be illegal for me to give James Baldwin anything less. It wasn’t even the particulars of the story that stuck out to me - the way he renders the world via language is absolutely masterful. I love you James
