This book is basically a social and economic survival guide dressed up as a scandalous memoir, and once you realize it, the entire book hits different.... It's not just a picaresque tale of a "wicked woman" stealing, lying, seducing, and scamming her way through 17th-century England (and a bit of America for good measure)... it's a sharp, sometimes exhausting, sometimes darkly funny commentary on how a woman survives in a world that gives her no power but her wits.
