I honestly expected this story to be darker than it was. Every time I go into a WWII book, especially one dealing with the Holocaust I'm always leary, wondering how dark of a rat whole is the author going to take me down. And while this book does deal with the inner workings of Auschwitz and Birkenau there is such hope in Lale, such determination to survive at whatever the cost, that it doesn't drag you down into despair. The Tattooist of Auschwitz touched me deeply in a way that some Holocaust memoirs have failed. Some have said they don't care for the way Heather Morris used so much dialog and that it isn't factual enough. But including the conversation and thoughts these people might have had adds a more immediate personalization. There are enough books that deal with the hard facts of concentration camps, but I find Morris' writing style more relatable.

A touching story of endurance and trying to survive.

I was wavering between giving this book 3 stars or 4 stars.

I read a couple of top Goodreads reviews before starting The Tattooist of Auschwitz and was surprised to find that the biggest criticism - no prose - was not just an opinion but a blatant issue. A love between two people's fate is so uncertain should be a harrowing tale, but the emotionless writing style failed to evoke any emotion in me.
