After decades I have picked up a random book from my favorite writer... and I was transported back to those days of my student life when I use to travel to a public library every fortnight to get his book issued and reissued... again and again... over and over...
I love the way Mr. Maugham defines the characters in detail, tries to put into words what goes inside the heart and mind of the character not just what they say and do...
Its a classic, please read it and also read all the books Somerset ...more

This could be the best of Maugham.

in his books Maugham acts as a minor character in the scene and usually tells the story from that characters perspective, the hero is somebody else. in this the hero is a 40 year old man who runs away to be a painter.sources say this book is based on life of the painter Paul Gaguin. the painter wanders from city to city. the characters are all imaginable and seem very real except the painter who looks like he has lost his mind. i have read many of hi bests books and this one is one of the bests.

Couldn't put it down! A validation of Maugham's understanding of the human condition. No one writes like him today.

This is a fictionalized account of the life of the painter Paul Gauguin. It's about the work and compulsion of making art.
