What a cute, funny and interesting series. The main character is an 11-year old girl who is a genius. She has grown up without knowing her mother, her father is a virtual stranger who always has his head in his stamp collection. So she spends more time with her cook, who's food she despises, and her father's butler/driver/gardner/do-it-all man named Dogger. Flavia is unlike any 11-year-old I've ever met. But boy would I love to meet a character like her! She's fascinated with chemistry, which sh

Oh Flavia! I love you..........I think I would go mad if she was my daughter, but she's not! Alan Bradley has created such a precocious wonderful character who I think can be best summed up by this line: "I don't think Scotland Yard would be comfortable handing over bits of...brain to an eleven year old"......roll on book number 2!

Can't believe an acid-tongued teenage girl is able to narrate a story in such a precocious, sarcastic way. This is a good story for boredom, though you might not be too surprised to find the who the murderer is in the end.

I snagged this book when I was working at the high school last year. The librarian there was so nice she'd often let me preview brand new books before they even went out onto the shelves. This was one of those. And I'm glad I snagged it when I did because it was really fun to read, and made my work day just fly by. I love murder mysteries - especially by agatha christie - but this one was quite different from others I've read. It is set in england (like a lot of christie's) but the detective is

Loved this book. The intelligent, 11 year old Flavia is a delight. The humor the Alan Bradley gives this child is very clever. I still find it hard to believe a man wrote this book since the relationship between Flavia and her 2 older sisters was very amusing. I really liked the predicaments Flavia gets into when trying to solve the mystery and how she talked her way out of them. Very cleaver. I am on my way to reading the second in the series. I hope Alan Bradley keeps writing them.

The hero of this book is Flavia de Luce, a young girl living with her 2 sisters and her father. She is a marvel - even if you don't read mystery novels, read this one for a chance to meet Flavia.

Fun mystery. It's set in england and the main character is a young girl however, this is not a teen read. A bit quirky but overall a very well written and excellent charcter driven story.
