I really really enjoyed this. We’re the characters deep and well developed? No. Was it amazing writing? Not really. But the atmosphere was thick and immersive. An ever present, malevolent mist surrounding their land, constantly threatening to swallow them up. Dark forests so scary that “Trees” became their curse word (not a fan of that part).
The magic was different. With both ambiguous spirit of the wood magic mixed with hard magical deck of cards. I loved all aspects of it.

Oooo this was so delicious! At first a bit dry, but then especially in those last 100 or so pages was some EXCELLENT payoff. Absolutely incredible atmosphere in this book, and a premise that really had an incredibly interesting magical system. This one's a stunner. ...more

The writing was flat and it was confusing until almost halfway through (poor world building). The story has potential but the execution left me feeling meh. I already have book 2 so I will finish the duology. I hope this is one where book 2 is better than book 1.
