Reviewers have recommend that newcomers to Neil Gaiman not read American Gods first. I would agree. Not that this book might not be his best but it is definitely way out there truly defying classification or genre. The book is sacrilegious as all get out and that is fine with me but it has something to offend everyone somewhere in the book… and that's still fine with me. I wanted an escapist summer fling. But I got halfway through George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, and found myself tempted to cheat on it; normally I'm such a monogamous reader, made patient by years of editing manuscripts. But when Neil Gaiman beckoned from the shelves of Books, Inc. on San Francisco's Chestnut Street, well, I might have to break Martin's heart. Finally read a Neil Gaiman book, so I can cross that off my list now. As for the book itself - well, there is not really much to say. It was ok. It doesn't compel me to go read more of his stuff.
