If I taught English or history in middle school, this is a novel I would assign to read. Many books assigned to me in those years I remember as being horrible. Then there were the books that surprised me, I actually liked them. This is one of those books. I didn't love it, but I am glad I read it.

Octavian, the son of an African princess, is being raised in relative luxury in Boston in the years leading up to and during the American Revolution.
