If I taught English or history in middle school, this is a novel I would assign to read. Many books assigned to me in those years I remember as being horrible. Then there were the books that surprised me, I actually liked them. This is one of those books. I didn't love it, but I am glad I read it. ...more

Octavian, the son of an African princess, is being raised in relative luxury in Boston in the years leading up to and during the American Revolution. He is receiving a "classical education," learning violin, Latin, and Greek. One day he learns that he is the focus of a science study of Africans.
