A continuing though while I read this novel: There's to much BS, padding, extra info that doesn't improve the characters or advance the story. This needed tighter editing and could have been a better book at 400-500 pages. I still fell that way having finished it—Too Much Prose!

The bad guys are fashioned on vampires. No question about it. I'm not a vamp/zombie fan in novels. What saved this for me was a Sci-Fi internally consistent reason for their existence, not a supernatural reason—no crosses

Enjoyable, really long, like others have said, reminds you of a mix of "The Stand" and other similar works.
