The first time I read this was in 1974. I had forgotten all the details. This second reading was just as enjoyable as the first. But with time, our impressions change, and I could not fail to notice a hint of racism in his treatment of the Indian characters. In spite of this, there is also a positive hint at condemning the British rule in India.

There is a lot to like in this mystery, but as I more and more often experience, the book is too damn long to hold my sustained interest. I didn't finish,thinking there's another waiting to be cracked.
2019: came back, reread and this time finished. Still too long and much to like. Would rate 4 stars with an ending that seemed plausible. ...more
