The first half of this book, involving Sarah, was riveting. Her journey to find her family, especially her little brother, kept me on my toes. I liked how the book was structured: the alternating chapters on Sarah and Julia, and then chapters focused on Julia in the later half of the book. The book lost its momentum after Sarah's viewpoint ended and I, somehow, felt that Julia's obsession with Sarah and Vel' d'Hiv' was too forced. This book combined historical fact with a fictional story and the outcome was a powerful and moving story. I, like the main character, didn't know about the Vel' d' Hiv' roundup of Jewish families in France during WWII. It would seem that Hitler's evil reach was far and wide, even more so than they teach in most history classes. I could give it 3 1/2 stars, I loved the first half of the book but I think it lost a bit of it's intrigue when it was only then told from Julia's point of view. I also thought that the reasons the author gave for Julia's commitment to the story were a bit forced and at some times not quite believable.

Fascinating story based on true events that interweaves the past and present...I would have gone up a star or two, but something about the writer's style and the modern woman's narration annoyed me.
