I wish I could give more stars, I added this to one of my all time favorite books. I don't see how anyone could suggest this book being a perfect recommendation for snobs, as I am not a snob and absolutely fell hard for this book. Unreal? I don't think so, I think life and art often feed and imitate each other. I have seen some far fetched realities in my time and I think there is a lot of depth to this novel. I think there are a percentage of people in the world who think deeper and feel more i ...more

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. A friend told me she couldn't make it through, but I really liked it. Maybe it's b/c I spend a lot of time in my head, so I could totally get where the characters were coming from. I didn't love the ending, but won't ruin it here. I would like to say, though, that where else will you find a French chick who likes Blade Runner and can quote from Husserl and Eminem? Just good stuff...

This one will stay with you after you're done.

At first I found the main characters pretentious, self-centered and annoying, but it was interesting enough to keep reading. By the final fourth of the book, I was actually riveted. I am intrigued with all the art and philosophy in this book and the idea of beauty as a reason to keep living...the characters undergo such change, it is enough to give hope to anyone; in fact, this book is prescribed as a remedy for depression. Worth reading.

I'm so enjoying hearing Barbara Rosenblatt's voice again. It's been years since I've listened to a book narrated by her. This book has become my very favorite. Renee Michel, the nondescript concerierge of an exclusive Paris apartment building, is a brilliant autodidact. She lives with her cat Leo, named after Tolstoy, and has one friend, a Portugese maid to some tenants. She is far brighter and learned than any tenants, but doesn't want any of them to know. The other narrator is Paloma, a brilli ...more

If you are good at inferring vocabulary and get through the first 1/2 of this book, you will end up LOVING IT! Though I thought the philosophical standpoints were hogwash, I still grew to understand both narrators, Renee and Paloma, and their struggles as the book progressed; they became more lovable. And, the ending? Worth it!

I loved this book from page 1...it's very rich with words...and possesses a wealth of deeply honest thoughts. When I write, I write what I call, "human documents" because I want to explore the things that make people tick, the "how come" of their actions. "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" is an elegant, well written, and magical human document. ...more
