The novel pivots on an issue that even Obama said was above his paygrade to render a judgment on. The issue isn't the moral center of the book, but it projects the book into the future indefinitely. When I read the book 15 years ago, I thought, hey, this is the Great American Novel that everyone talks about, but no one gives creedance to, either its existence or possibility.
