I read this after reading Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood: A Novel both modern, prophetic dystopian novels which made Atwood a new favorite author.
The Handmaid's Tale, IMO, is a greater work. It works on several levels, the most obvious being the slavery of women. While I suspect this level is what many moderns will concentrate on, I find the prophetic vision of the novel most compelling and topical for today's Western civilization, the US in particular.

I'm kinda tired of reading books that I'm supposed to like, but that I hate. I've wanted to read Margaret Atwood for a while, so when this was picked for Nashville's city-wide read, I was excited. However, I felt like I was 2 steps behind everyone the whole time. Also, I intensely dislike books that are misogynistic.
