Wow. Double wow. I had no idea this Hardy boy could seriously write. This is one of my favorite stories in all of literature, and it wasn't the book that originally made me fall in love, it was the A&E mini-series with Justine Waddell playing the title character. If you've not seen that version (most have seen the Polanski take on Tess), I highly recommend it.

This book was on my daughter's 10th grade GT English reading list which inspired me to read it. After almost giving up several times, I actually ended up liking the book in spite of the depressing ending. I was so annoyed by the Victorian hypocrisy of Angel, the man whom Tess loves that I wanted to shake him!
If nothing else, the description of the lifestyle of the rural lower class in 1890s England will make you glad you live in modern times. Good story... fun to listen to on CD, although my son ...more
