Historical fiction set in two time periods -- 1943-1944 war-torn Italy and 1955 Italy -- a story about a country and a people in a war without winners. I wanted someone to root for -- but Italy, which at first sided with the Nazis, and then at the end of the war, after the invasion of Sicily by the Americans and British, switched alliances, didn't have the grand heroes -- at least not in Chris Bohjalian's fast-paced new novel.
