I am happy to have this tome off my tbr pile! I recognize that this is fine writing, but I honestly didn’t enjoy it. I find the problems of the Russian elite to be tiresome. I think this period of writing just isn’t for me - I lack the patience for these long, slow moving story lines.

I know, I know, this is supposed to be a classic. The story started off interesting but they lost me along the way and finishing it became a matter of sheer willpower. Very wordy (why say something in 5 words if you can use 50) and all the digressions took their toll on me. It also depressed me where the characters were in the ending - very Russian, I suppose but not for me. I don't necessarily need a happy ending but appreciate one that makes me think.
