This is one of those books that you wish everyone in the world had a chance to read. The moment I finished it, I reflected on it for a while, and then I had the urge to pick it up again and start re-reading many of the pages I had earmarked. This book is a piece of poetry. At first I thought that the language was ostentatious, but then as I got into the book, I realized it was as natural as could be. A quirky philosophical and insightful piece that I found difficult to get into for the first one-third of the book. And then miraculously it began to flow. Renee Michel is the 54-year old concierge for a Parisian apartment building. Plain, overweight, widowed and gruff, she projects the image of the working class catering to the rich. But underneath that veneer is a person who appreciates the fine things in life – art, literature and music – all hidden from those who inhabit the building. Paloma

Enjoyed the second half a lot more than the first; less philosophy, more plot. Worth the perseverance for the exquisite ending.
