Just finished this. There were lots of elements I liked; the different world with the supernatural Others in it, the format of three interrelated stories and the moral quagmire of the 'reality' of trying to maintain a balance between good and evil. Interesting take on the age old Good v Evil dichotomy - not to try and defeat the Evil but to live with it and keep the status quo, thereby doing a greater good(!?) by avoiding the inevitable bloodshed of a showdown. Can't rate this properly because I didn't finish it. I couldn't get hooked because it was so hard to understand. I think you need to read this in the original Russian because the English translation seems to be spoken in ciphers and it's impossible to understand the real meaning of things.
Too bad, I've had this one on my to-read-list for many years.
