Book number 4 for #januaryinjapan : Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

This is my first Murakami book. I read that it is quite different from his other books and also that this is the first b Book number 4 for #januaryinjapan : Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

This is my first Murakami book. I read that it is quite different from his other books and also that this is the first book that brought him all the fame. I found the writing to be very endearing. Murakami really brings out the mundane repetitions in the lives of his very ordinary characters and makes the narrative more visceral. His descriptions of nature are tranquilizing. His characters are all portrayed poignantly. They are all flawed, some deeper than others. Themes explored are mental illness and suicide among the youngsters, specifically in the context of the Japanese society of late 1960s. There's an atmosphere of melancholy throughout the book, which made it a perfect winter read for me. There's also profound wisdom embedded in the mundane dialogues between the characters. “What happens when people open their hearts?". "They get better.”

Toru is a 37 year old man at the beginning of the book. He happens to hear the orchestral cover version of the Beatles "Norwegian Wood" on a plane which evokes strong memories from his past. He starts recounting the events that occurred in his life from when he was 18-20 years old. Naoku is the woman Toru falls in love with but she is suffering from mental illness which makes her act elusive towards him. He later falls in love with Midori, who is also going through her fair share of problems in life, but she is a complete contrast to Naoku. Where Naoku is elusive, Midori is enticing. Where Naoku is reserved, Midori is audacious. Death is a frequent occurrence in Toru's life and also in the lives of Naoku & Midori. In fact, death is what connects the lives of these 3 characters, even though Naoku & Midori never really meet each other. Death of a loved one, whether it is via suicide or via illness. “Death was not the opposite of life. It was already here, within my being, it had always been here, and no struggle would permit me to forget that.”

“No truth can cure the sorrow we feel from losing a loved one. No truth, no sincerity, no strength, no kindness can cure that sorrow. All we can do is see it through to the end and learn something from it, but what we learn will be no help in facing the next sorrow that comes to us without warning.”

A história se passa no final da década de 1960. Tudo está em mudança da França, aos Estados Unidos, ao Japão. Experimento de vida nada tem a ver com radicalismo. Mas com a vontade de explorar as possibilidades. E é assim que encontramos Toru Watanabe pela primeira vez. Sua independência, sua busca, pa Toru é um herói como qualquer outro rapaz vivendo no final da década de 1960. Bom menino, educado, respeitador dos mais velhos. Tem o ímpeto de dedicar-se às matérias que provavelmente serão úteis no teatro, carreira na qual imagina o seu futuro, mas procura acima de tudo o amor. Sair da casa paterna teve seu peso, mas a vida deixou de ser segura e previsível para ele desde a morte de seu melhor amigo Kizuki. Com ele e a namorada dele, Naoko formavam um trio de amigos inseparáveis. No entanto, Kizuki se suicida e Toru acaba se apaixonando pela namorada do amigo.

Para crescer emocionalmente e finalmente tornar-se o adulto que almeja ser, há de fazer escolhas. Para isso precisa experimentar. Como Nagasawa, um amigo do dormitório explica: “Se você só lê o mesmo que todo mundo lê, acaba pensando o mesmo que todo mundo pensa” [43]. E Toru experimenta, não só novas amizades masculinas, pessoas com quem jamais imaginara pudesse se relacionar, como com garotas nos bares, numa incessante procura de satisfação sexual. Não leva muito tempo para descobrir que pelo menos essa busca deixa o sexo insosso e sem sentido. À medida que se abre para conhecer novas pessoas Toru desenvolve seu próprio julgamento.

Mais do que um romance de passagem da adolescência para a vida adulta Haruki Murakami retrata uma era. Talvez a melhor representação do período que eu já encontrei na literatura contemporânea. Não importa que seja situada no Japão. Este é um retrato de uma geração inteira, chamada no ocidente de baby-boomers, que chegou à idade adulta antes de 1974, do final da Guerra do Vietnã. E o título, referência à música dos Beatles do mesmo nome, não é coincidência. A letra de "Norwegian Wood" é um paralelo bem feito à trama – ou falta dela – no romance.

Diferente de muitos não achei a história deprimente, nostálgica, nem achei as cenas de sexo despropositadas. Fiquei encantada ao ler os capítulos sobre o retiro nas montanhas. Só ali deu para perceber o que Murakami iria eventualmente desenvolver até chegar à sua extraordinária obra "1Q84".

Eu poderia dar a minha interpretação aqui sobre as três mulheres da vida de Toru. Mas não quero me alongar para não revelar mais do que o necessário. Mas são três as mulheres importantes em sua vida: uma – um sonho inatingível; outra contato com a realidade, uma união com a terra, com o sólido e seguro. E a terceira um sopro de vida, fértil de possibilidades. Ele faz a escolha certa.
