When Michael Berg is 15, he catches hepatitis and becomes ill while walking home from school. He is found by Hanna Schmidt, a woman who is more than twice is age. She takes him to her appartment, cleans him up ,and sends him on his way. Later, he returns to thank her, and the two begin a love affair. Part of thier "meetings" is that Michael reads bits from many books to Hanna. Then one day, Hanna is no where to be found, and Michael can't seem to locate her...

I liked that this novel was on edge. It's so small that there was a directness to the language. The affair is highly significant for both people. She is running from the past and he is running to his future. A great rare glimpse of a very human situation.
