This passed my book speed-dating test from back in September, but in the end this was not a book I needed to finish.
Part of the problem is that the publisher translating these started with this book, but this one is #3. The sombre fall weather in Iceland can have a depressing influence on the people of Reykjavik. Even when it is not raining, the clouds are hanging deep over the city and the short days of light are preparing for an even darker winter. Arnaldur Indridason depicts the atmosphere brilliantly. A bleak, yet not uncommon environment for excellent thrillers. The translation to German was a bit wonky from time to time. But I like Inspector Erlendur and his fellow investigators and look forward to reading the next book.

From a seemingly conventional crime novel this book evolves into a powerful tale of the consequences of rape, genetic heritage and fatherhood. There are a number of fathers in this novel. The relationship of the protagonist Erlendur with his daughter is one of the memorable ones. It turned out to be more complex than it initially seemed to be. It's an unpredictable relationship and I will want to see how it evolves.
