The book explores the relationship/balance between the Mongol hearders and wolves on the Mongolian steppe.
It is told from the perspective of a young Chinese student sent to work with the herders and raises questions about the modernisation brought about by the expansion of the ethnic Chinese into the outer reaches of post-war China and the invariable impact to local culture and the environment.

It took me two weeks to finish this book--partly because I was busy with other things, and partly because this book was deep and slow-going. My student from Inner Mongolia gave me this book to read--and I was glad to get a glimpse into the world of the Grassland Mongolians. This book is much more than about wolves--but about the human spirit, human connectivity to nature, and human destruction. I'm a huge fan of The Call of the Wild and White Fang but couldn't get into this one. Or not that I couldn't get it into it, but it was so long, after I while I didn't want to get back to it.
