Amazing! What a great read - I literally could not put People of the Book down. I was transported to the worlds of Sarajevo, Vienna, Venice, Tarragona and Seville as Geraldine Brooks mesmerizes us with a combination of mystery, science, history, culture and religion as she unfolds the fictionalized story behind the origins of the Sarajevo Haggadah, the rare and famous illuminated Hebrew manuscript. This book was entertaining enough to keep me listening for 10+ hours. This doesn't happen very often.
I won't go into the plot, which is thoroughly described in plenty of reviews, and I won't go into a deep discussion on the religious symbology of the book.
I wanted something to entertain me during my commute and workouts and I got it. I think the author did a great job with the research on the Hagaddah (a book of which I knew nothing of) and compared to other historical fiction I've read the cha ...more
