A very sad and beautiful story about friendship between two women set in 19th century China. I absolutely loved the writing style and had no problem getting into the story it was very interesting to learn about 'nu shu' the secret writing of women. Some of the traditions and customs of the time you can't help but find appalling and horrific such as the practice of 'foot binding' and being forced into arranged marriages. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical fiction.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a wonderful story about the friendship between two women, laotongs, who endure a lifetime of trials and tribulations enduring the pressures of their culture and traditions during the 1800′s. I read this book as part of the Around the World in 80 Books Challenge and the Monthly Keyword Challenge for January.

While I did not really enjoy the book - especially the foot binding! - it led to one of the most interesting book club discussions ever and to me calling one of my best friends "old same" ever since.
