3.5 stars. It would have been 4 stars the last couple of chapters the humor left and it turned into a Disney ending. It lost it's bite.

Prior to the ending I found myself laughing a lot; the humor was sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek and nothing was off limits. The writer deciding he wants to quit the world and live doing nothing, goes, with his girlfriend to a remote island, Kiribati, where tropical weather means it is hot (very very hot) and leaving civilization behind means you can get nothing, ever

A fun, easy read that follows the author and his fiancé on their move from Washington, D.C. to the small island nation of Kirabati. Sitting near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, Kiribati challenges newcomers with its humidity, temperature, regular blackouts and shortages of food options, water and beer. Explore the best, and the worst, the island has to offer along with Troost who writes about his adventures in an entertaining way. I have conflicted feelings about this book. The author is good at crafting humorous turns of phrases, which makes me like it. But most of the time, the author also comes across as a jerk with no cultural sensitivity whatsoever. The way he describes things, the residents of Kiribati don't do things the way he's used to, so they're strange. ...more
