“Habit woke her at this hour. It was an old habit she had developed when young and it had stayed with her as she matured. She had learned it along with the other rules of married life. She woke up at midnight to await her husband’s return from his evening’s entertainment. Then she would serve him until he went to sleep.”

A very smart, moving novel about a very dysfunctional family in Cairo, Egypt during the British occupation, and the events leading up to the 1919 Revolution. I found it to be a compelling novel, and while the main character of Ahmad is one of the most despicable that I've ever come across, I found myself wanting to know more. Very accessable to non-Arabic readers, and very enjoyable. Two sequels follow. Five stars overall, and very much recommended.

It is getting increasingly difficult to continue reading this book. It has to be the storyline similar to other books I've read, for example, Khaled Hosseini's.
