What Members Thought

This is a stately novel. The poetic writing, the characters and the imagery are masterly. It was also a slower (i.e. harder) read than I anticipated. If I didn't have the encouragement of book club I probably would not have finished. Another GR member remarked that "Tonya . . . represented the old Russia. Lara was the transitional Russia and his last wife was the Russia after the revolution." Which I think is a brillant analogy and helps organize the book and themes for me. We're still discussin

Pengennya memberi lima bintang, tapi tetap ada hal2 yang aku kurang paham, terutama kalo udah masuk ranah politik. Mungkin seharusnya baca buku ini sambil mendalami Revolusi Rusia. Tapi di luar itu buku ini benar2 indah. Romantis-tragis. Yang aku suka metafora2 cantik yang bertebaran di sini, juga penulisan Boris Pasternak (pas ternak opo toh sampeyan, mas Boris??) yang unik. Membaca buku ini kayak main puzzle, satu persatu memasang keping yg tak beraturan, sampai ketemu wujud aslinya...
