Small Island takes the reader to Jamaica, Britain and India around World War II and it does so in a very enjoyable way, presenting us different perspectives and voices, male and female, English and Jamaican, which lighten up the read whenever otherwise it would get stale and repetitive. Juggling those different voices is Andrea Levy's greatest gift: I really had the feeling to get into the narrator, to understand his feelings and reactions, even when they were stupid or mean.
