This book was read for my 2016 Reading Challenge Around the World in 80 Books

Fall of Giants by Ken Follett is what I love most about historical fiction. Wonderful characters, exotic settings, and real life history woven throughout. This novel, first in a trilogy, follows several character’s narratives. From a Welsh coal mining family, to the family British aristocrat, two Russian brothers working in a factory, a German spy, to the aide to American President Woodrow Wilson. The novel begins ear

I've read other books by Ken Follett, however I hadn't read the Century trilogy. It was a good read. If you're a fan of war-time fiction, then this book will be a good choice (it chronicles events leading to WWI, circa 1914-1919)!

I liked the book's narrative style where the PoV characters are from all the countries that are impacted by WWI - an English mine worker and his family, an aristocratic Earl and his sister, a Russian factory worker, a German aristocrat and military officer, an American

A wonderful read..Begins in June 1911 and ends at Jan 1924. A thick book with 850 pages but keeps up the pace on every single page. It covers many issues the prominent one being the first world war, Russian revolution, Bolsheviks, the political scene in England,America's role in the war, Germany after the war etc. The characters are developed beautifully and appear at appropriate places in the book, my favourite are Maud,Walter,Ethel,Billy and Grigori. The lives of the principal characters who a ...more

Some from the book cover:

1911, a thirteen-year-old boy, Billy Williams, begins working down the mines as George V is crowned king.
Billy’s family is inextricably linked with the Fitzherberts, the aristocratic owners of the coal mine where he works. And when Maud Fitzherbert falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German embassy in London, their destiny also becomes entangled with that of Gus Dewar, an ambitious young aide to Woodrow Wilson, and two orphaned Russian brothers, the Peshk

Rating: Three and on-Half Stars.

Follet intertwines real historical events with those fictional in this account of WWI, and the events leading up to it. Where the historical detail is precise, the narrative reads average. It is not a poorly written novel, simply not the best from this writer.
