Actually 2.5*. It was mostly good and well-paced, but I have this lingering sense that I've just finished something that was quite laborious. It was evocative of Penang in the 40s and to a certain extent the present day, but I baulked at the suggestion (less than a theme) of 'past-lives' that came out in the second half of the story. The main character was not as engaging as he should have been to carry such a lengthy story.
