Yes, tragedy strikes. Yes, a main character you grow up with dies but it isn't as heartbreaking as it should have been. This novel takes place during the Nazi build up during WWII. It is difficult to read sometimes - the horrors of war are just so terrible. The author has a beautiful way of writing - so smooth and detailed. The story alternates between the past and the present, and also between the 2 main characters. It is sometimes confusing if you don't concentrate on the characters.

This book won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2015. ...more
