UPDATE REREAD 2023:
After 20 years, I reread this book for some reading challenge - and it is still very good! Moving, unbelievably heartbreaking, especially that I know more about Afghanistan situation nowadays.. So sad that this book can still be relevant after 20 years.. but also amazing how the writing feels so timeless. I just hope Hosseini will write something new soon...

I consider this book worth more than three stars on some levels, though, particularly because it is essential that clueless Westerners read SOMETHING about Afghanistan, and this explains much of it, and also because of the scene in the stadium late in the book, which alone makes it worth it and should be required reading for everyone.
