I read Caxton's translation and I have not read the original (yet), but I did enjoy it. I think it still conveyed Chaucer's wit well and gave a good sense of what Chaucer did in Middle English. Of course I cannot judge properly without reading the original. However, my view of the tales does seem to be similar to the views of those who did, which makes me believe Caxton did a good job.

i was forced to read this by a teacher that thought it was the best thing in the world. therefore, i hated it. i should give it another chance.
