For a book that was released in the mid-1960s, The Old Man and Me feels entirely fresh. Our young protagonist, who has her eyes on the titular old man for not-so-pure motives, is a bit of an anti-heroine and yet you can’t help but empathize with her. It helps that she has such an intelligent, wry, no-nonsense voice with which she narrates the story.
