Having lived the ExPat life in an Asian country I can empathize with the author, though I was in Japan which does not have orphanages. In fact, my Japanese language teacher was surprised to learn that Americans adopted children from foreign countries. This book gave me a great appreciation for the US families who have chosen to adopt Chinese children.

Any book involving children in heartbreaking situations is going to be difficult to read, this was also difficult to read because of the writing. The author just wanted to describe the period of time in China with her family, not trying to cover the culture shock or her reactions to it, so her responses and thought processes were laid out and honest.
