An all-too precious, vaguely racist, and ultimately boring story about a woman who wonders how her life would have turned out had she married her college boyfriend. Spoiler alert: he turns out to be boring and kind of a jerk and she realizes she was supposed to be exactly where she ended up. Which means the whole point of this book was... nothing. Meh.
It's only six years since I read this book, and I've almost completely forgotten it, except that I know I liked it - so the star rating is something of a guess. Anne Tyler is one of my favourite authors, so I'm sure the fault is mine rather than hers! I often find I enjoy her books even more second or third time round, so will aim to reread this one soon.

This book is beautiful. What I think is the most interesting is the fact that we all look back on our lives and wonder if we had done this or that - would it have turned out better. This better contemplates this question.
