Mercy is a lone shifter in a world where werewolves, vampires, and other creatures of the night are on the brink of public discovery. Usually the different supernatural groups avoid/kill one another, but Mercy tends to find herself involved with them all. Mercy takes in a drifter teen to find out he is a new werewolf on the run. Mercy Thompson is a shifter, she can turn into a coyote at will, who owns a garge in Washington state. One day a terrified new werewolf shows up at her garage. Mercy manages to get him to the local pack alpha, Adam. Things go sideways, Adam's daughter is kidnapped, and Mercy ends up in the middle of it all. I thought this was a great start to the series. This was fun. Mercy is a complicated person...she'll go to church, bake cookies, repair a car's engine and then shoot some bad guys. Oh yeah, and she also happens to be able to turn into a coyote.
This is , as I often say about pure pleausure reads, the literary equivalent of eating potato chips or buttered popcorn. It's meant to be fun and it sure is hard to stop once you get started. Briggs is a talented writer. Her dialogue is snappy and occasionally hilarious.
