It had been probably a dozen years since I’ve read this though I’ve recommended it to countless friends since. Having watched the latest season of The Crown, I found myself wanting to reread this to see if it really was as delightful as I remembered. It is every bit so.

I stumbled across this on the recommendation of author Jan Karon in some interview or another so I have her to thank not only for my beloved Mitford, but also this.

Sheer delight. A hilarious and true look at someone who lives to read, who just happens to be Elizabeth II. Any reader will see him/herself here. And it comes with a punchline!

At the library yesterday, I spotted a slim volume with a bright red binding. I slipped it from the shelf and read the front flap. Excitedly, I checked it out and brought it home. I will finish it today, and probably buy my own copy right away. It is The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. I love it so far. I am on page 83 of 120 pages. A novella about what happens when the Queen of England decides to take up the hobby of reading. The book contains some interesting insights on reading and writing. There is also a lot of humor aimed at the british nobility. I found the ending too abrupt but overall a fun, short read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Alan Bennett is a delightful writer and reader. He writes so artfully and beautifully. This goes on the list of favorite books!
