I think Achebe is a great novelist, and I expected to learn a lot from reading this selection of lectures. But I was disappointed. First, Achebe goes over well-worn and familiar ground; most of what he discusses was cutting edge in the sixties and seventies, not the nineties,when this book was published. Second, he chooses two writers for specific ridicule, Elspeth Huxley and Buchi Emecheta. This is a fascinating look at literature in Africa and how the authors struggled with identity.
