This book is about duty, family, and about a strong women who early in her marriage has to learn to "kill the self", but also comes to head a large successful merchant class family at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. There is a lot of historical detail about the sake brewing industry, but this is never boring, and I thought that Lebra's restrained writing style fitted her subject.
