Set in what looks to be 1970s-era Seoul, Limon's debut is a highly enjoyable procedural featuring two well-drawn US army CID officers. Normally confined to busting up black market operations, the two must battle army bureaucracy while trying to solve the murder of one of the hundreds of prostitutes who live off US GIs. Stuck in isolation with all my books, I picked this one randomly from the shelf.

I have a hard time with the military lingo and hierarchy but the atmosphere is vivid and unusual. Not my usual fare—I’m glad I found this.
