What Members Thought

I didn't really love this, I found it tedious, and Sam Spade is an ass, even to his friends. I assume that must be part of his appeal, but it doesn't appeal to me. I can't help comparing this to Chandler's The Big Sleep, which I read recently. Chandler's book dazzled me. I'm clearly a Chandler gal, not a Hammett gal!

Funny story...
This little piece of pulp fiction is just "pretty good" - which is to say that it's nothing to really put on the top of the 'to-read' pile. However, I decided to make it my literary companion for my trip to San Francisco, the city where the story is set. That gave the experience of reading it a little extra kick. Catching mentions of streets and neighbourhoods I was wandering around...sometimes even coming across those passages while I was sitting in said neighbourhoods. It brought ...more

I read this for a continuing ed class I took on the detective fiction genre. The book is absolutely perfect. Of course I heard Bogart's voice in my head the whole time, but that's better than hearing, say, Bobcat Goldthwait's voice.
