I found the author's book Krieg: Stell dir vor, er wäre hier very powerful. This one not so much. The premise is forced: a schoolboy leaves school, sits in a tree and gives himself over to nihilism. Nothing means anything, it's all pointless. No school official or parent ever makes him go back to school or tries to introduce home schooling. He functions as an avatar that sets off the story proper which is that of his classmates trying to prove to him that yes, there are things that matter. Look:

Could this be the bleakest YA ever? It would get my vote.
Here is the story: Pierre decides that nothing matters, walks out of his classroom, climbs up into a tree, and refuses to come down. The others in his classroom feel compelled to try to convince Pierre that some things do matter. Using increasingly bizarre and horrific methods, Pierre’s classmates attempt to demonstrate that things matter.
While I respect what this author was doing with this book, it is most definitely not my cuppa tea.
