I almost loved this and indeed, it was better than Broken Glass Park, but I was disappointed when it was over. The beginning, which takes place from 1978 on in the Soviet Union, is satisfying and the characters are unique. Rosalinda, the heroine, is direct and controlling and deluded and vain, a no-nonsense woman who is not always wrong. Whew! Is there a narrator of a book out there anywhere who is more savage, more self-satisfied, and more manipulative than Rosa Achmetowna, the narrator and main character of Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine? What a story! I read straight through and I feel like I’ve just spent four hours in hand-to-hand combat.

The Good: Cool title: The Bad: The first 15 pages, the narrator describes how she was trying to make her pregnant daughter miscarry. Yuk. I guess it is supposed to be humorous but I don't find it so. ...more
