I'd thought I'd read all of the Scarpetta novels but it turns out I'd missed this one and the last one ("Port Mortuary"). So I set about to remedy that and I couldn't be more disappointed. I've enjoyed the exacting and sometimes gross detail in the other books in this series but this one was so bloated with detail that it was overpowering. I had written off Scarpetta years ago. I was tired of her bragging egotistical ways. But this book arrived in the mail unannounced. It was quite good. Now then, I am not going to run out and read all of the Scarpettas that I missed over the last several years. Moving on...

First, I'm a Scarpetta fan... so I'm going to read the books. That said, recent books are not what I loved at the beginning of the series. I do like the return to first person, but find the plots now only center on evil people out to get Scarpetta and her cluster of friends -- and a sterile, workaholic, self-centered group they have become.
