Alex is gritty page-turner that intrigues with it unpredictable twists and turns and a cast of unconventional characters. The tension builds immediately as the reader knows something is not quite right with Alex and you wonder why her obsession with wigs. But, before we can ponder too long on this point, and sudden and brutal kidnapping stuns Alex (and the reader) and all she knows now is that she does not want to die. This book was so good that I couldn't put it down--and yes, that's a cliche but it's also the literal truth. I started this one evening and ended up reading through the early morning hours, rarely surfacing for air. Alex is a fantastic part of Pierre LeMaitre's crime trilogy. (Although this book is #2 in the trilogy, it is the first one to be translated into English. But don't worry, it absolutely works as a standalone story.)

I see why this won an award, it doesn't follow the typical procedural and the characters come to life. I was chuckling at the frugal colleague who never pays for cigarettes, men who have a chip on their shoulder with their height, etc. relatable. I skipped through the graphic ordeal that Alex went through. The plot kept going and I was still hooked, even when several main characters were dead halfway through the book. This is the first book of this series that has been translated into English though not the first in the series. I may be missing some of the back story, which may have increased my enjoyment, but the novel is roughly divided int three parts and the title character does not seem to have the same personality in the three sections. Maybe I'm missing something in the translation. Also, this is another serial murderer, with no new ground broken in presentation, and, frankly, this topic is getting way ...more
