I'm glad I gave Amado another chance, after DNF-ing Gabriela. I was really drawn to the travails and motivations of the characters; I cried at several parts of the story. It sounded like it was narrated by a Captain of the Sands, who excused some things and defended others, such as sexual violence and I know the book was published in the 1930s but I'm still docking a star for it. ...more
